At a motorcycle rally organised to promote the compulsory helmet rule for two-wheeler riders from July 1, those who were wearing helmets were distributed a book on Mahatma Gandhi, En Vaazhkkai, En Kadhai , here on Friday.

Thirty bike riders were given copies of the books since they were wearing helmets ahead of the implementation of the rule and for setting a good example.

Organised by the Madurai police and Regional Transport Offices, the rally that started at Goripalayam was flagged off by Commissioner of Police Shailesh Kumar Yadav. Deputy Commissioner of Police (Traffic) A.G. Babu , RTO of Madurai North K. Kalyanakumar, RTO of Madurai South M. Singaravelu and RTO of Madurai Central J.K. Bhaskaran were present.

More than 300 police personnel, two-wheeler dealers and the general public participated in the rally which went through East Veli Street, South Veli Street, West Veli Street and North Veli Street before returning to Goripalayam. Tracts and pamphlets urging the public to wear helmets to prevent accidents were distributed.
