Hyderabad police,transfer of liver
Hyderabad: The liver from a brain dead farmer from Visakhapatnam was harvested and transported to Hyderabad on Tuesday morning to be transplanted in a 63-year-old patient in Global Hospitals here.
A green channel was provided for the liver by the Hyderabad police and the ambulance carrying the organ reached the hospital in 20 minutes from Shamshabad airport.
The liver was harvested from Satyanaryana, a farmer, who was declared brain dead at the Seven Hills Hospital of Visakhapatnam.
Under the government-run Jeevandaan scheme, the Andhra Pradesh unit alerted the Global Hospitals management about the availability of the organ as it stood next in line for the organ.
The retrieval process started at 3.30 am in Visakhapatnam and the liver was sent in a cold-storage box to Hyderabad. The green corridor was created by the traffic police during of 9 am rush hour and the organ was received at the hospital in double quick time.
The Global Hospitals team lead by liver and pancreatic transplant surgeon Dr Tom Cherian was successfully carried out. It was an eight-hour surgery on the 63-year-old patient.
With this case, the total number of liver donations received by the Jeevandaan scheme since its inception in 2013 went up to 110.
