The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) on Thursday said that India would be chairing the BRICS Summit from February to December 2016.

"India will chair the BRICS Summit from February 2016 to December 2016. From 2017 onwards, the BRICS calendar is going to match the annual calendar and India will chair the BRICS for 11 months," said Secretary (Economic Relations) in the MEA, Sujata Mehta.

"The first announcement was that we should have an annual BRICS fair and our intention is that the first of this will be during India's chairmanship during 2016," she added.

Mehta further said that there might be a BRICS under 17 football tournament during India's term as chair.

"We will also try to concretize on the other announcements which are the railway research center, cooperation amongst supreme audit intuitions, a BRICS digital initiative, the BRICS agricultural research centre, cooperation amongst cities, an annual BRICS sports meet," she said.

"There might be a BRICS under 17 football tournament during India's term as chair. The first major project of the new development plan should be in the field of clean energy and a BRICS film festival," she added.

The Secretary (Economic Relations) further said there were three sets of engagement.

"There was a meeting that the leaders of the BRICS delegation had with the business council which comprises five senior persons from each of the BRICS member country," said Mehta.

"After that there was a restricted session in which the leaders discussed the items on the agenda which had been set for the restricted meeting. That was followed by the public session in which the extended delegation joined the leaders. Finally, we had the signing ceremony in which three documents were signed and the documents that emanated from this summit were released," she added.
