Jet Airways, India’s second largest airline by the number of travellers flown, on Friday launched a flash sale of tickets for travel next year, the second such sale in less than a week.

The seven-day sale, which began on Christmas day, offered 25% discounts on the base fare of its international flights. It also offered economy class tickets on domestic routes starting at Rs. 2,015 and business class tickets at Rs. 7,999. The discounted tickets were available for travel between February and September next year.

An airline spokesperson refused to comment on the sale. Although a link was put up on the Jet Airways website, it did not specify details of the routes on which the discounted tickets would be available.

This was the second such sale flash sale offered by a domestic airline for travel next year. Last week, budget carrier GoAir had offered 17 lakh discounted air tickets starting Rs. 1,469 for travel between January and March.

Travel operators said such flash sales have become the new industry strategy to whip up passengers’ loads. “We saw a healthy rise in flight loads this year primarily because of discounted tickets being offered across domestic airlines through flash sales. The trend is likely to continue with new players such as Vistara entering the market next year,” said a Khar-based travel agent on condition of anonymity.

According to data from the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), domestic passenger volumes between January and November this year were 609.43 lakh, up from the 558.40 lakh recorded during the same period in 2013. “The growth rate has been close to 10%. Flash sales were the primary driver behind the numbers,” said a senior DGCA official requesting anonymity. Booking patterns of air tickets this year also showed that almost 80% leisure travellers within India and those holidaying aboard booked tickets 40 to 90 days before the date of travel.
