A pall of gloom descended on the ancestral house of the Daggubatis in the rice-rich Karamchedu village, as friends and relatives mourned D. Rama Naidu, one of the glorious sons of the soil.

Villagers who gathered in front of the legendary film-maker’s house fondly recalled the philanthropic activities of the Dada Saheb Phalke Awardee, including construction of an eye hospital, a community hall and an Indoor stadium in the village.

As an MP between 1999 and 2004, he developed Karamchedu and other villages, which were part of the Bapatla Lok Sabha constituency under the ‘Janmabhoomi’ programme, before quitting active politics on losing to NTR’s daughter Daggubatti Purandeswari, his relative, recalled his aide Muthiah Chowdary.

Son of a landlord, Daggubatti Venkateswarulu, Mr. Ramanaidu had his schooling at ABM High School in Ongole.

He did farming, ran a rice mill and later a brick-making unit, before getting engrossed in film-making, which was his passion, recalled Mr. Chunchu Seshaiah, a distant relative of the movie mogul.

Recalling his association with the noted film-maker, Hindu Dharma Parirakshana Trust Prakasam district Coordinator Aluru Venkata Ramana Rao said he and Mr. Rama Naidu were deeply involved in running the Andhra Socio-cultural Club in Chennai.
