In the Year 2014, As many as 562 cases of sexual harassment of women at workplace were registered. While 57 cases out of them were reported at office premises, 469 cases among them were registered at various places related to work. This data was made official by Minister for Women and Child Development, Maneka Gandhi in a written reply to Lok Sabha.
The Union Minister opined there is responsibility on the Government to collect data of sexual harassment cases and monitor the implementation of Sexual Harassment of Women at Workplace (Prevention, Prohibition and Redressal) Act, 2013. She then added, National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) started collecting data under insult to the modesty of women (section 509 of IPC) at work place since last year.
Ministry of Women and Child Development has instructed all States & Union Territories on December 23rd, 2013 and October 27th, 2014 to ensure implementation of Sexual Harassment of Women at Workplace Act 2013. Later, A proposal of constituting an Internal Complaints Committee was placed before the Ministry of Corporate Affairs. Even Leading Associations such as ASSOCHAM, FICCI, CCI and National Association of Software and Services Companies were asked to ensure effective implementation of the Act in the private sector.
