Months after women activists led by Trupti Desai of Bhumata Brigade campaigned, the Shani Shingnapur temple trust on Friday decided to allow women to enter into the inner sanctum of the temple.
The announcement was made by the trust members after the meeting.
The Bombay High Court had on Friday directed Maharashtra government to take pro-active steps for ensuring compliance of law to prevent discrimination against women on entry to places of worship, saying "it is the fundamental right of a woman" and the government should protect it.
Earlier in the day, amid raging row, over 100 male forcefully entered into the inner sanctum of the temple in Ahmednagar district to worship the deity. The men entered the temple to offer prayers on the occasion of Gudi Padwa.
