Oscars 2016 fashion report: Kate Winslet is worst-dressed, JLaw is best?

Hollywood divas were dressed to nines on the biggest night in the Hollywood calendar. The actors who took the daring plunge and looked gorgeous include Jennifer Lawrence, Cate Blanchett and Charlize Theron.

Actors Saoirse Ronan, Margot Robbie and Naomi Watts dazzled in their blingy numbers.

Singer Lady Gaga, actors Rooney Mara and Olivia Wilde looked classic in ivory. On the down side, Mindy Kaling, Alicia Vikander, Heidi Klum and Sandy Powell failed to make a mark.

And when it comes to red carpets, Kate Winslet, 40, isn’t typically one to deviate from her signature sleek and sophisticated style. But all of that changed at the 88th annual Academy Awards when she stepped out in a custom-made Ralph Lauren gown that was as shiny as it was risky. The dress may have perfectly showcased her gorgeous figure, but it was a disappointing look for the actress nonetheless.

Here are a few stars, who aced their look (and few who didn’t).

Took the plunge with a mini train

Actors Cate Blanchett, Charlize Theron and Jennifer Lawrence took the plunge in low-cut gowns. Looking refreshing and quirky, Cate Blanchett was a delight in Armani Privé gown embellished with feathered flowers. Not caring about the no-red-on-the-red-carpet rule, Charlize Theron’s statement red number by Christian Dior was high on class and sex appeal. Like always, Jennifer Lawrence impressed us , this time with a layered lace Dior Haute Couture gown.

One-shoulder brigade

Ditching pluging necklines and strapless gowns, actors Jennifer Garner, Heidi Klum and Olivia Munn took the one-shoulder route. Jennifer Garner looked stunning in a black Versace gown, with minimalistic bling. Although Heidi Klum was on trend with her one-shoulder chiffon gown by Marchesa, with undertones from hues of purple, she failed to impress. However, standing out in tangerine, Olivia Munn looked picture-perfect in a Stella McCartney number.

For the love of bling

While we have been going on and on about bling being the hot trend, here’s actors Saoirse Ronan, Margot Robbie and Naomi Watts taking it to the red carpet. Saoirse Ronan rocked an emerald green sequined gown by Calvin Klein. Margot Robbie in a plunging, snakeskin Tom Ford gown couldn't be missed. Actor Naomi Watts was a knockout in a sparkling purple and blue sequinned gown by Armani Prive.

Angelic and pristine in white

The ever-classic white was still a preferred colour by Lady Gaga, Rooney Mara and Olivia Wilde. A Brandon Maxwell white pantsuit with a flowing train rather than a gown was the red carpet pick for singer Lady Gaga. Actor Rooney Mara looked drop dead gorgeous in her lacy white Givenchy gown with torso revealing cut-out and a thigh-high split at the centre. Actor Olivia Wilde went for a pleated ivory Valentino haute couture gown.

Some celebs missed the red carpet mark completely. Actor Alicia Vikander in her yellow creation was a blooper, we couldn’t miss the untidily folded skirt hemline. The black and blue number did nothing for actor Mindy Kaling, except for her looking like wearing a curtain. We need not tell you why designer Sandy Powell also made it to our worst-dressed list.
