Campaigning Ends for Narayankhed Bypoll

SANGAREDDY: In most cases, when national leaders tour states, they greet people in the local language in an attempt to steal their hearts. It has become a common practice, but here is a strange situation where the leaders in their native place are greeting people in the language of a neighbouring state.

It may appear shocking but it’s true in Narayankhed. The main political leaders and candidates are greeting people in Narayankhed of Medak district in different languages of the neighbouring states. The constituency has multi-lingual population and political leaders who speak Telugu are learning other languages to address people.

People in some villages in the constituency speak Kannada, Malayalam, Urdu and Hindi. People in tribal thandas speak Goruboli. Leaders touring the villages are greeting people with Namaste, Assalam Alaikum, Namaskaarada, Ram Ram, Namaskar, etc. and learning phrases of different languages. TRS campaigner T Harish Rao is also doing the same when touring the villages and greeting people in different mothertongues to win their hearts. Candidates are thus learning words in four to five languages. Zahirabad MP BB Patil speaks in five languages in his election campaign.

Constituency has about 1,88,839 voters and half of them speak Kannada, Telugu and Marathi. According to political leaders, 20,000 speak Marathi, 20,000 speak Kannada and over 30,000 speak Goruboli. An electrifying campaign came to end on Thursday evening, as Narayankhed voters cast their votes on Feb 13.
