VIJAYAWADA: All arrangements are in place for the foundation stone laying ceremony of the new terminal building at Gannavaram Airport in Vijayawada on October 19. Chief minister N Chandrababu Naidu will lay the stone in the presence of civil aviation minister P Ashok Gajapathi Raju and urban development minister M Venkaiah Naidu.
The new terminal building with car parking and associated infrastructure at Vijayawada is proposed to be constructed at a cost of `150 crore. It will be a steel-and-glass structure with state-of-the-art modern passenger-friendly facilities such as baggage handling system, inclined arrival baggage claim carousels, central air-conditioning, public address system, fire alarm system, flight information display system, CCTV for surveillance, check-in-counters with common use terminal equipment, car parking, etc. Inspired around the rural-urban blend of Vijayawada’s culture, the interiors of the airport will be designed to portray a unique and smart gateway to the region.
The local environment and culture references as well as the historical art and architecture of the region will be interpreted in a modern way to add grandeur to the space. The new terminal building will have the capacity to handle 500 persons (250 departing and 250 arriving) at a time with an area of 9,520 sq m.
The Vijayawada Airport, which is set for upgrading, has plans for extending its runway from the present 10,500 feet to 14,500 feet to cater to the Code-F aircraft with associated facilities. The new apron is suitable for parking five planes and the new plans are for expanding the same to accommodate 10 more A320 type of aircraft at once. The old apron can accommodate two ATR-72-500 aircrafts.
At present, the Vijayawada Airport is suitable for operating AB-320 aircrafts in all weather conditions. The existing passenger terminal building has been modified recently and expanded to have an area of 3,200 sq m to handle 250 passengers per hour.
