With the police still unable to arrest the culprits two days after the rape of a septuagenarian nun, students and residents blocked the convoy of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee when she visited the Convent of Joseph and Mary High School here on Monday.
Ms. Banerjee visited the school in the afternoon and met the nun at a hospital. Though she said her government would arrest the guilty, the students blocked her way as she returned.
Slogans of “We want justice” and “We want CBI probe” rent the air as the convoy remained blocked on National Highway 34 for an hour.
Mamata Banerjee’s convoy surrounded by crowds during a protest at Ranaghat on Monday.
Those who are behind this attack they will not be spared. We will take strict action. But those of you who are shouting for a CBI [probe] and trying to save the BJP, I condemn you,” Ms. Banerjee told those who blocked her way. The blockade was lifted around 8 p.m.
Earlier, Ms. Banerjee and Director-General of Police G.M.P. Reddy could offer very little to the people about the progress of the investigation of the crime. Though she referred to a “few arrests” being made, her response was vague as the police had said that they had detained a few persons.
Both Mr. Reddy and Arnab Ghosh, Superintendent of Police, Nadia, told journalists that there was no arrest though the police had detained “eight to ten persons.”
