After much denying and browbeating, the AP Government has finally admitted that there were indeed farmers' suicides in Anantapur district.
While the YSRCP has all along been maintaining that there were about 86 farmers' suicides during the last nine months in the drought-stricken district, the TDP government not just flatly denied them, but even castigated the YSRCP for magnifying things and over-reacting. Chandrababu had even said that not a single farmer had committed suicide in Anantapur.
However, with YS Jagan all set to launch his yatra in the district, the TDP went into hyperactive mode. The district unit admitted that there were seven suicides due to mounting debt burden. The number was subsequently hiked to 29. The government has also hiked the compensation amount for the kin of the dead farmers.
YS Jagan is all set to launch his Rythu Bharosa Yatra in the district from Sunday (february 22). An alarmed TDP also announced that the compensation to the kin of the dead farmer would be increased to Rs 3.50 lakhs and they would be given a loan of Rs 1.5 lakh. The YSRCP leaders however maintains that the number of suicide deaths in Anantpur is much higher.
