JEE Main rank now depends on Inter 2nd year marks: CBSE

The Central Board of Secondary Education will give weightage only to the second year Intermediate marks of students to calculate JEE Main rank list for admission to  the National Institutes of Technology.

For admissions to the NITs, the Central Seat Allocation Board of the CBSE will prepare a final rank list giving 40 per cent weightage to Class XII marks along with the JEE Main. And only those students who fall in the top 20 percentile of their respective Class XII boards are eligible for the JEE Advanced. Admissions to NITs is on the basis of JEE Main and Class 12 marks while that to IITs is through JEE Advanced.

The general rule being followed over the years since the JEE Main and Advanced were introduced is that the marks appearing on the memo would be considered for the weightage and the percentile.

Asked about the issue, Prof. U.S. Triar, Coordinator of the CSAB and faculty member at NIT Patna, said, “Though in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana, separate board exams are conducted in Class XI and Class XII, only marks scored in second year Board exams will be considered for weightage.”

NIT Patna will conduct the counselling and admission process this year. Even IITs will follow a similar method for determining eligibility to the JEE Advanced. “If a Board gives aggregate marks considering both Class XI and Class XII examinations (in the 10+2 system), then only the Class XII marks will be considered,” the JAB of IITs stated in its admission procedure.
