PM Modi launches National Handloom Day

Prime Minister Narendra Modi today arrived chennai on a day’s visit to launch the National Handloom Day. He was received at the airport by Governor K Rosaiah and Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa, among others. Jayalalithaa presented the Prime Minister with a bouquet on his arrival.  

Addressing at the launch of the first National Handloom Day in Chennai, PM Modi urges people to 'enhance use of handlooms in daily lives'. “The handloom sector has inherent strengths that we need to market,” the Prime Minister says.

Talking about how the government can increase the use of Handloom, Modi says, “We need to take initiatives in order to make Handlooms fashionable. Fashion, design education also needs to be re-oriented. We need to make our handloom tradition the centrepiece of fashion for India and the world.”

Top police officials were deployed to directly supervise the security arrangements in Chennai considering the Prime Minister’s arrival.

Besides launching the Handloom day, the Prime Minister will also present Sant Kabir awards and National Awards for handloom weavers on the occasion.

He  would also launch ‘India Handloom’ brand later in the day. An exhibition showcasing master creations of the awardees is also being inaugurated on the occasion in the adjacent senate building of Madras University.
