YCP loses its solid grip on Kurnool district owing to defectors

The YCP of YS Jaganmohan Reddy, which had shown its full strength in Kurnool district in the last elections by winning the two parliamentary seats and 11 of the 14 assembly seats, is today an enervated party in the gateway to Rayalaseema. The latest MLA to quit the party is SV Mohan Reddy.

In fact, the defections began soon after the last elections with MP SPY Reddy joining the TDP. The other YCP parliamentarian from Kurnool, Butta Renuka, had initially decided to quit the party but later resolved against it.

Attracted by `Operation Akarsh' of the ruling TDP, Bhuma Nagireddy (Nandyal), Bhuma Akhila Priya (Allagadda), Mani Gandhi (Kodamooru), Budda Rajasekhar Reddy (Srisailam) and now SV Mohan Reddy (Kurnool) have defected to the ruling TDP.

SV Mohan Reddy was earlier elected as an MLC. In the 2014 elections, he won on the YCP ticket by defeating industrialist TG Venkatesh.

Soon Jagan is going to to begin a 3-day fast in Kurnool to protest against construction of a major irrigation project by the Telangana government on the Krishna, which could threaten water release for Rayalaseema.
