It took just a one-liner from Kapil Dev to reveal what he thought of the captaincy skills of M.S. Dhoni and Virat Kohli.
In the city for a promotional event, Kapil was asked what he thought of the leadership qualities of the two players and the former skipper responded in Hindi: “Baap baap hota hai aur beta beta. (A father is a father and a son is a son).”
Avoiding any possible controversy on the subject, Kapil went on to add, “I enjoy watching both these players perform. Let them play, why compare?”
He concluded by adding, “One day the son will also become a father.”
Answering questions from the mediapersons after launching a seven-a-side cricket event involving all the districts of Rajasthan to be held over four weekends culminating on January 10 next year, Kapil appealed to the members of the Fourth Estate to support the game and not get busy comparing personalities.
Asked to comment on Sunil Gavaskar’s plea to revive dialogues aimed at resuming cricketing ties between India and Pakistan, Kapil categorically stated, “I am with the government on this issue.
“Whatever is the government policy (on the subject), I will support that.”
It was clear that Kapil was far from happy with a section of the media persisting with questions on his recent comment on Sachin Tendulkar.
Refusing to be drawn into further controversy, an understandably-irritated Kapil Dev told the questioner, “You trust your understanding and write whatever you think is right.”
He did support Ravi Shastri for being critical of the pitch curator following India’s massive defeat in the fifth One-Day International in Mumbai. “I feel the home team should get a favourable pitch. If you play in South Africa, do you think Indians will get a pitch to their liking?”
When probed for his views on India’s upcoming Test series with South Africa, a thoroughly-bored Kapil came up with a stock reply, “I think the team which plays better cricket will win.”
