6 tips to help you sleep better during hot summer nights

Summer has almost arrived, which means that you are going to toss and turn through the hot and humid nights. While the rising heat and humidity keeps you up, we have put together tips that will help you sleep a little better.

Drink a refreshing herbal tea:

The hot weather can make you reach for a cold beer, especially on weekends. Drinking alcohol late in the night can lead to fragmented sleep. Instead, go for iced chamomile tea to quench your thirst. What’s more, according to a study published in the Molecular Medicine Reports, chamomile tea has sedative effects that can promote sleep.

Don’t indulge in late night cravings:

The hot weather may make you crave for ice creams. Indulging in these delicacies too close to dinner can upset your digestive system and make you uncomfortable while you sleep, says nutritionist Neha Chandna.

Drink enough water:

Not drinking enough water during summer can make you feel tired all day and also hamper your sleep. So ensure that you sip enough water at least 30 minutes before going to bed (not too close to the bedtime as it can make you want to pee in the middle of the night) says nutritionist Priya Kathpal. This habit can also aid in the smooth running of your digestive system.

Stretch before going to sleep:

Making a habit of stretching in the night can help release tension from your hamstrings, shoulder, hips, lower back and shoulders, help you cool down and thus promote better sleep, says yoga expert Abhishek Sharma.

Take a cool shower:

When the hot weather is keeping you up, it can be a good idea to take a refreshing cold shower before hitting the sack. Sometimes, sunburns can also make you feel irritated. If you suffer from sunburn, ensure to moisturise your body with a soothing aloe vera lotion before going to bed, suggests dermatologist Dr S.S Tarsi.

Switch on the AC:

You may think keeping the windows open in summer can lull you to sleep but dust and pollution can lead to itchy eyes and make you sneeze and cough, disturbing your sleep. Using the ceiling fan or air conditioner is a better option to keep you cool during summer.
