HYDERABAD: The whole nation may be talking about the horrific suicide of a Dalit student at the prestigious central university in Hyderabad and the subsequent protests across the country, but guess what Telangana chief minister K Chandrasekhar Rao was busy with? He did not even comment on the issue, and he was busy shopping for a fresh pair of clothes!
The chief minister of the newly carved state went to Sri Sai Khadi Vastralaya near Old MLA Quarters at Hyderguda area in the city and bought himself new fabric for trousers and shirts. He gave them for stitching at the same shop.
KCR walked into the shop around 1 am and spent about an hour. Shop proprietor Saibaba said KCR has been his regular customer since 1990 even when he was an MLA. Saibaba refused to disclose the details of the bill. Learning that KCR was on a shopping spree even when Hyderabad was 'burning', photographers rushed to click pictures.
But, he told them through his staff that it was purely his personal affair and sought privacy. The photographers returned disappointed. And what was KCR's son and IT and panchayat raj minister KT Rama Rao doing? He too engaged himself in a private meeting organised by the Nayee Brahmins (barber community) at Chikkadpally area the same time.
Incidentally, Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi was addressing university students at the same time. And, home minister N Narasimha Reddy too was busy attending the same meeting and was releasing the calendar brought out by the Federation of Reddy Community Associations in Telangana. Till the time of going to press, there were no statements from the CM or any other government representative on the issue. KCR's daughter and Nizamabad MP K Kavita has slammed union minister Bandaru Dattatreya and the ABVP for triggering tension on the campus.
Notably, Andhra Pradesh chief minister N Chandrababu Naidu too chose not to comment on the student's suicide.
The student hailed from Andhra's Guntur district, but settled in Hyderabad. He is attending the World Economic Forum annual summit at Davos. His office released a series of photographs about his meetings with investors instead.
