Hyderabad: Hyderabad has become a hub of contract marriages for quite some time. In a fresh incident of contract marriage came to the fore, a victim, Mehrin Sharif, a 20-year-old from Azampura, who got married six months ago, had a very short married life. Her husband who is an Omani returned to Oman leaving her helpless at the doors of the Telangana Minorities Commission for Justice.
Young woman is one among the 1,112 women who filed complaints against “contract marriages”.
According to the news published in The Hindu, she is now at the mercy of the State as her family has refused to take her in.
It is also reported that most of the complainants are between the ages of 18 to 25. Contract marriages are performed at the cost of Rs.1 lakh to Rs 5 lakh.
Speaking on contract marriages, Abid Rasool Khan, Chairman of Minorities’ Commission said that many women with children need support as they won’t get any financial support from their families.
It is to be noted that some time not just family but also employers did not let them join back their jobs.
