BJP rewarding uncultured language,Congress stages nationwide protests,Giriraj comments on Sonia's white skin

NEW DELHI:
In first reaction following Union minister Giriraj Singh's racist comment about her sparked a nationwide outrage, Congress president Sonia Gandhi has said that she was not going to comment on people who have a narrow mindset.

"Would not like to comment on people who have a narrow mindset," Sonia said at Neemuch, Madhya Pradesh.

"There can be either Giriraj or Ramraj in this nation, and Modi ji has decided there will be Giriraj," another senior leader Kabil Sibal said.

Earlier, Bihar chief minister Nitish Kumar described Union minister Giriraj Singh's statements on Congress chief Sonia Gandhi and her son Rahul Gandhi as "uncultured", saying the BJP rewards people who speak in such language.

"The comments are uncultured and reflects the mindset of the person," Kumar told reporters while coming out of the Assembly and reacting on Giriraj Singh's comments. "It's clear that BJP rewards people who speak in such language," he said and pointed to astronomical rise of Singh to become minister of state for MSME at the Centre.

Congress condemned the remarks and demanded Prime Minister Narendra Modi to sack the minister.

"This is the BJP's atrocity. They talk about women empowerment but insult women. The Prime Minister says 'Beti Bachao Beti Padhao'. Their duplicity won't work," said a protester, Jagdish Sharma.

The Congress party, meanwhile, reiterated the demand for Singh's resignation.

"When a minister uses such language, nothing less than his resignation is acceptable," party spokesperson Shobha Oza said.

"If Rajiv Gandhi would have married a Nigerian lady than a white-skinned girl, would Congress party have accepted her leadership?" Giriraj asked during a meeting in Bihar's Hajipur district on Wednesday.
