India stands 12th in Countries with world’s fastest internet

A high-speed broadband connection is still a distant dream for most Indians if one compares the average internet speeds globally. With average internet connection speed of 2.0Mbps, the country ranks at a lowly 116 in network tracker Akamai’s latest quarterly report ‘The State of the Internet’.

Curious which are the countries that offer highest internet speeds and where India stands? Here’s a look…

South Korea


South Korea continues to dominate the chart with an average connection speed of 22.2Mbps. The country, however, saw a quarterly fall of 12% in its average connection speed. Year-on-year, the speed improved by 1.6%.

Hong Kong

At No. 2 on the list is Hong Kong, retaining its Q3 rankings. Hong Kong has an average internet speed of 16.8Mpbs, a growth of 3.4% over the previous quarter and 37% year-on-year.

Japan

Next on Akamai’s list is Japan which also retains its previous quarter's ranking. The country has an average internet speed of 15.2Mbps. This equals to a growth of 1% over the previous quarter and 16% year-on-year.

Sweden

Moving up one place, the Nordic nation of Sweden is also among the countries offering highest internet speed. The average broadband speed was 14.6Mbps, a quarterly increase of 3.5% and an increase of 34% annually.

Switzerland


The paradise on earth, Switzerland, witnessed its ranking slip this quarter. Ranked at No. 4 in the previous quarter, Switzerland now ranks at No. 5 in Akamai’s latest report with an average internet speed of 11.6Mbps. At 14.5Mbps, the country’s internet speed saw no change compared to the previous quarter though it was up 21% over the previous year.

Netherlands

Netherlands too managed to retain its position. The country has an average internet connection speed of 14.2Mbps. This equals to a growth of 1.7% quarter-on-quarter and 15% year-on-year.

Latvia

Latvia climbed up one place on Akamai’s list, this despite a fall in internet speed both quarterly and annually. Ranked at No. 7 this quarter, the country recorded an average internet speed of 13Mbps, a decline of 2.6% over the previous quarter and 25% over the previous year.

Ireland

Ireland ranks at no. 8 in Akamai’s report with average internet speed of 12.7Mbps, a decline of 8.9% over the previous quarter and an increase of 24% over the previous year.

Czech Republic


Czech Republic also retains its ranking. The country has an average internet speed of 12.3Mbps ranks at No. 9. The average internet speed in the country grew by 0.1% quarter-on-quarter and 8.4% over the previous year.

Finland

Finland was at the tenth position with an average internet speed of 12.1Mbps replacing Singapore. The Scandinavian nation saw a 2.8% quarterly increase in the speed and while the change was 33% year-on-year.

India

India ranks at a distant 116 position in Akamai’s list with an average internet speed of 2.0Mbps. The average internet speed in the country, however, has gone up by 2.1% over the previous quarter and 28% over the previous year.
