TS Govt rejects SC's proposal over sharing Krishna Waters with AP state

Telangana government has rejected the proposal of the Supreme Court that it could share Krishna river waters with Andhra Pradesh from the water allocated for the combined Andhra Pradesh by Brijesh Kumar Tribunal.

During a hearing on the Krishna Water Tribunal in the Supreme Court on Friday, the court suggested that Telangana and AP could share the waters allocated to combined AP. However, Telangana rejected it saying it wanted exclusive allocation of Krishna waters.

Telangana government’s argument was that the Brijesh Kumar Tribunal should take up  fresh hearing in the wake of formation of Telangana state. The Brijesh Kumar Tribunal gave its award before the formation of Telangana and allocated water to the combined state.

The AP Reorganisation Act suggested that the term of the Krishna Water Disputes Tribunal shall be extended with the following terms of reference, namely:  (a) shall make project-wise specific allocation, if such allocation have not been made by a Tribunal constituted under the Inter-State River Water Disputes Act, 1956;

(b) shall determine an operational protocol for project-wise release of water in the event of deficit flows.

However, Telangana wanted fresh allocation of waters in Krishna river with specific reference to Telangana state. The Supreme Court upon hearing the arguments on Friday directed Maharashtra, Karnataka, AP and Telangana to file fresh affidavits, which should not be more than three pages. The apex court posted the case to April 29.
