HYDERABAD: The ministry of external affairs (MEA) has asked state governments to raise awareness about overseas education and immigration rules of various countries where Indian students go for higher education.
In reply to state IT minister KT Rama Rao’s letter on the recent deportation row, external affairs minister Sushma Swaraj has said students must do their part of research about the institutes and carry all valid documents for immigration checking.
She said the Indian government is in touch with US government officials to collect information on the entire episode of deportation. The ministry also discussed with the US embassy in Delhi and urged them not to deport those who carry a valid Visa. She said US officials regretted the deportation and assured to process immigration checks more carefully.
Sushma Swaraj recalled that MEA had already issued two circulars alerting students on the immigration process in the USA and to make them aware of the formalities there. She advised students to utilise the services of seven counselling centres set up across the country for guidance. They can also meet the US officials concerned to get accurate information, she said, adding that the MEA is in touch with both the Telugu states to provide information about the deported students.
Swaraj assured that MEA will help students in legal matters, if any and the same has been conveyed to respective state governments, her letter added.
Rama Rao had written to the external affairs minister a few days ago and sought support for the deported students from Telangana. More than 500 Indian students were sent back from various US airports in December and January for various reasons.
