TDP, BJP spar over budget allocation

TDP, BJP spar over budget allocation

The megre allocation of Rs 100 crore in the Union budget to the prestigious Polavaram project in Andhra Pradesh has kicked up a row between the State unit of the BJP and the ruling TDP. While the BJP leaders claimed that the Centre has certain doubts that are needed to be cleared by the State government, the TDP leaders made it clear that it is the duty of the Centre to complete the project. BJP leader and former Union minister Purandheswari found fault only with the State government with regard to the Polavaram project.

"The Centre has certain doubts on the ongoing works and the completion of the project. The State government should clarify these doubts before making any fresh demands on this," Purandheswari told media persons in Rajahmundry. Observing that the Polavaram Project Authority is not being taken into confidence, the former Union minister said that the Centre will respond only after going through the State's version.

Sharply reacting to this, senior TDP leader Gorantla Butchaiah Chowdary said that Purandheswari does not have basic minimum knowledge on Polavaram and she is making statements out of sheer ignorance. Taking a serious view of her comments, he said that it is the duty of the Centre to complete Polavaram as it has been declared as the national project.

Without finding fault with the Centre for not releasing enough funds to complete it, she is blaming Chief Minister Chandrababu which reflects her lack of awareness on issues. "She has made certain comments which are meaningless," he added.

Another TDP leader Varla Ramaiah too came down heavily on Purandheswari. He told media persons at Vijayawada that if she has any plans to join the TDP, the party doors are permanently closed for her, he said. Varla Ramaiah is of the opinion that Purandheswari is making such remarks only as part of her struggle for existence.

The comments made by her only strain the relations between Chandrababu and Prime Minister Narendra Modi. She is acting like a covert of the Congress, he remarked.
