In the wake of escalation in protests following the suicide of HCU research scholar Rohith Vemula in January this year, Union Home Ministry is keen on upgrading the security of HRD Minister Smriti Irani.
As of now, Smriti Irani was provided Y-Category security. After finding that the current security arrangements were insufficient during the review meeting, Home Ministry felt the need to upgrade the Union Minister's security to Z Category. The Ministry came to the opinion anti-social elements could take advantage of the protest to attack Smriti Irani.
Right now, Z or Z-plus Security was provided for Home Minister Rajnath Singh, Finance Minister Arun Jaitley, Road Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari, RSS Chief Mohan Bhagwat, BJP President Amit Shah, National Security Advisor Ajit Doval, Ministers of State Kiren Rijiju and Jitendra Singh.
