A lot has been said about the 18th of December, 2015 especially because of the two cinematic marvels like Dilwale and Bajirao Mastani facing off each other at the box-office. While the two may prove to be a treat in their own senses, let’s now see how Sanjay Leela Bansali’s Bajirao Mastani starring Ranveer Singh, Deepika Padukone and Priyanka Chopra turns out to be.
Story:
Bajirao Ballal Bhat(Ranvir Singh) also called as Peshwa Bajirao is an ambitious warrior, the only warrior in the country who has won 40 battles and lost none. After dethroning the Mughals from Delhi, his only agenda is to rule the entire country.
Amidst all this, Bajirao is also stuck in a battle with his family and mother (Tanvi Azmi), who is against inter-religious marriages, while Bajirao is in love with Mastani(Deepika), a Muslim woman and is also legally wedded to Kashibai (Priyanka Chopra). Along with his battle for his country, will Bajirao also win the battle of love, forms the rest of the story…
Positive Points:
Ram-Leela gave us the ultimate chemistry between Ranveer Singh and Deepika Padukone, and Bajirao Mastani takes it to yet another level of rocking. The two actors cannot help but complement each other on screens.
Let’s start with the best. Ranveer Singh absolutely penetrates into his character, to give us the original Bajirao throughout the film, with his fine Marathi accent, mind-blowing expressions and passion and dedication towards his work, which can be seen in his eyes. He is an inspiration for many.
Deepika Padukone is nothing short of a marvel. She is not just beautiful, but ethereal. Her beauty knows limit and so does her acting skills. She bowls us over with her performance and angelic face. Priyanka has not been given much exposure, but she manages to shine in the crowd. The actor’s expertise in the field is enough for us to love her.
Rest of the cast including Tanvi Azmi, Milind Soman and Mahesh Manjrekar are equally impressive. The gorgeous costumes designed by Anju Modi and exquisite jewellery designed by the 226-year-old Delhi-based jewellers Shri Hari Diagems all just add to the films beauty at various levels.
Negative points:
But alas, all the visual spectacles doesn’t make up for a spectacle film. One thing we can say for sure is that Sanjay Leela Bansali was extremely confused as to what he needs to focus on more, the Bajirao and Mastani romance or the war. This way he could not fully focus on one area.
Secondly, the movie is extremely slow-paced and gets tedious in the first half. Also, too much weep, in the second half bores the viewers.
Technical Aspects:
Sanjay Leela Bansali movies and opulence go hand in hand. The director knows very well how to charm the audiences with his extreme and mind-boggling visuals. Just like any of his earlier movies, Bajirao Mastani too is an intensely made visual treat with ravishing settings and rich sets.
Also the special effects, even though too much, are awesome. The dialogues, even though too filmy, suit every scene and character in the film. The songs are good but not worth your money again. The cinematography and editing is top-notch.
Verdict:
On the whole, Bajirao Mastani is a must-watch for some exquisite visuals and out of the world performances by the lead cast. Missing this would mean missing on the treat that the movie is in a lot of senses. Go watch it.
