The Union railway ministry in order to fulfill the commitment of creating a railway zone for Andhra Pradesh has decided to split South Central Railway while the headquarters will continue in the twin cities.

This decision, according to sources, without causing any hardship to the 80,000-plus South Central Railway employees working, was taken in order to satisfy Andhra Pradesh. After an expert committee, constituted under the Andhra Pradesh Reorganization Act, didn’t favour to establish a new rail zone for Andhra Pradesh, the Centre came to this decision. Railway minister Suresh Prabhu will be announcing the decision on February 26 in the Railway Budget.

The expert committee didn’t favour setting up a new rail zone with headquarters at Visakhapatnam or at Vijayawada and has left the decision to the Railway Board.

Who gets what?

•  No SCR staff will be shifted due to South Central Railway bifurcation.

•  SCR Zone 1 to cover Telangana, with Secunderabad, Nanded and Hyderabad divisions.

•  SCR Zone 2, to cover Andhra Pradesh with Guntur, Vijayawada and Guntakal divisions.
