New Delhi: Delhi Chief Minister and Aam Aadmi Party chief Arvind Kejriwal was on the back foot on Tuesday over allegations against former Delhi law minister Jitender Singh Tomar in an alleged fake degrees case.
Amidst hullabaloo by the Opposition during the Budget Session of the Delhi Assembly, the CM broke his silence over the issue and said that if whatever is shown in the media is true, then he was kept in the dark. I was shown wrong documents, added Kejriwal.
A probe is on into the case of Tomar and if he is proven guilty, he would be given the punishment, assured Kejriwal.
We will not tolerate any wrongdoing, no matter what. We are not relatives of any minister. Hence, we accepted Tomar's resignation, said Kejriwal.
He also said that as soon as he got to know the truth, he made Tomar resign from his post.
The AAP chief, however, used the opportunity to train guns at the Bharatiya Janata Party, saying Prime Minister Narendra Modi should take action against External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj and Rajasthan Chief Minister Vasundhara Raje for supporting former IPL chief Lalit Modi.
Meanwhile, Congress leader Ajay Maken said Kejriwal was not kept in the dark. In fact, the Delhi CM did not tell anything to Delhiites despite knowing everything about the issue, added Maken. Senior Aam Aadmi Party (now former) leaders Prashant Bhushan and Yogendra Yadav brought the issue to Kejriwal's notice, Maken told reporters.
Earlier today, the Delhi Assembly was adjourned for 15 minutes after the BJP sought an explanation from Kejriwal on the alleged fake degree of Tomar.
Tomar is currently in jail in the fake degree case. He was arrested on June 9. Police have slapped a case of cheating, forgery and conspiracy against him.
