The Telangana power utilities in all likelihood may not impose power cuts this summer, particularly in the twin cities. Even if they have to resort to power outage on the city outskirts or rural areas it would be for a very short period, according to sources in the Telangana State Southern Power Distribution Company Limited (TSSPDCL).
The power utilities are confident on this ground as the farmers had not resorted to sowing of paddy this Rabi season in Telangana. This has resulted in huge decline in demand for power. As a result the power utilities are confident that they will be able to meet the demand both in domestic and industrial sectors without imposing power cuts in the city and district headquarters this summer.
The paddy cultivation was down by 50 per cent as compared to last year. As a result the energy requirement has reduced by 30 per cent. Normally, the power utilities have to meet the demand to run 15 lakh agricultural pump sets during the Rabi season in Telangana. This year, paddy was sown only under 6 lakh pump sets.
The TSSPDCL officials said that at present the total power demand was 145 MU (million units) and the utilities were supplying nearly 142 MU leaving only 3 MU deficit every day. Barring short time power outages in the mandal headquarters and villages during the peak hours, municipal corporations and district head quarters have been exempted from load relief. In the recent review meeting on power supply in the summer , State Energy Secretary Arvind Kumar instructed the heads of the two utilities (TSSPDCL and TSSNPDCL) not to resort to power cuts in the city as well as in the district headquarters unless there was some technical glitch in the power transmission and power generation centres. The official informed the utilities that the TRANSCO has also made arrangements to buy power from the exchanges in the peak summer to meet the power demand.
The officials claim that at least till May they are confident of meeting the demand without imposing power cuts. If the demand crosses 150 MU per day only then they may have to resort to power cuts and impose restrictions on industrial sector. At present, industries were being supplied required power every day.
