Telangana Budget allocates Rs.100 cr. for Brahmin Welfare Fund

Telangana Budget allocates Rs.100 cr. for Brahmin Welfare Fund

A sum of Rs.100 crore towards welfare of Brahmins has been allocated in the Telangana Budget 2016-17. The State Government will “work out the modalities for the welfare of Brahmins and decide on the action plan,” Finance Minister Etela Rajender said in his Budget speech on Monday.

Noting that Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao had decided to allocate a budget of Rs.100 crore, the Finance Minister said that the fund for the purpose would be known as ‘Brahmin Samkshema Nidhi’.

The decision had been taken as the Government felt that “like others in the society, even among Brahmins’, sizable number of them face problems due to poverty.”

In doing so, Telangana is taking a route pursued by Andhra Pradesh. The neighbouring State has set up Andhra Pradesh Brahmin Welfare Corporation and I.Y.R. Krishna Rao, after his retirement as Chief Secretary, has been made its chairman.

Andhra Pradesh proposes to enable 50,000 Brahmin families to progress economically in the coming fiscal. The State Budget for 2016-17 allocated Rs.65 crore as grant to the A.P. Brahmin Corporation, an increase of 85.7 per cent over that of 2015-16.
