Picking on Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s claim during his election campaign that he was “lucky for India,” the Congress said on Tuesday that his obsession with himself pointed to a “sick mindset” that borders on “narcissism.”
Congress spokesman and former Union Minister Anand Sharma said Mr. Modi’s “boastful claims” about India being recognised by the world only after he assumed office was an insult to all former Prime Ministers who “were dignified and far more cultured when it came to engaging with heads of states and governments of other countries.”
Asked about Mr. Modi’s suit with his name written all over it, Mr. Sharma drew attention to the international coverage of the U.S. President’s visit and pointed out that the Prime Minister had been “lampooned” globally because of it.
“That is the mindset I am referring to — I, me and myself; so full of yourself that you start wearing your name not just on your sleeve but all over your clothes. In English, there is a word — narcissism. That is why I say this is a matter of national concern. This kind of a mentality is surely not healthy.”
