Wardhannapet (Warangal): A 19-year-old intermediate second-year student Marepalli Raghu allegedly attempted suicide at Wardhannapet police station by jumping off from the station building. The incident took place during on Tuesday night and came to light on Wednesday.
According to the police, Raghu hailing from Labarthi village in Wardhannapet mandal was in love with a 10th standard girl of the village and they both eloped on March 6 and went to Ghatkesar near Hyderabad. Following which the girls’ grandmother Mahankali Ellamma lodged a complaint with Wardhannapet police who traced out the boy and the girl.
The police registered cases against Raghu under IPC sections 376 (rape), 363 (kidnap) and Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act (POCSO), Circle Inspector Santhosh Kumar said. The girl was sent to MGM Hospital for medical check up, he added but denied suicide attempt by Raghu saying the accused was not taken into police custody.
On the contrary, Mamnoor ACP Mahender told media after taking Raghu, while being taken for counselling to the first floor of the station jumped over the railings of the steps leading to the floor. He suffered fractures and was admitted to a private hospital for treatment, the ACP said adding the boy might have attempted suicide due to depression over the complaint by the girls’ family.
