Nizamabad: The works of Telangana State government’s prestigious Mission Kakatiya project are running at snail's pace in Nizamabad district due to various reasons. The first phase works of the project still remain incomplete though the project was launched a year ago. Telangana State Chief Minister K. Chandrashekhar Rao launched the Mission Kakatiya works at Patacheruvu of Sadasiva Nagar mandal in the district on 12th March, 2015. In all, there are 3,251 tanks Nizamabad district.
The State government had decided to renovate 20 per cent of the tanks every year under the programme. It started renovation works at 658 tanks in first year and released Rs 236.83 crore for the first phase works. The government finalised tenders on the condition that works below Rs 50 lakh should be completed within three months and the works above 50 lakh should be completed within six months.
In the past one year, the contractors completed renovation works of just 383 tanks and the works of remaining 275 are still pending. Last year, Chief Minister launched Patacheruvu works with the cost of Rs 38 lakh. Later, he sanctioned tank bund to Patacheruvu and granted another Rs 1.5 crore for the tank.
Due to these reasons contractor completed some part of the work and remaining works are pending due to delay in according administrative sanctions to the project. Irrigation SE G. Gangadhar said that the works were being delayed due to the lack of staff, delay in administrative sanctions, scarcity of sand, lack of awareness on the part of contractors, inexperience of contractors who entered newly into the field and others.
He said many new contractors enter into this field because government gave exemption to the Class V contractors to take up works below Rs 50 lakh. They quoted lesser rates due of lack of experience in the field. Due to these reasons, the works are still pending in the district, the SE added. Apart from these reasons contraction equipment are also not available.
In the beginning, public representatives monitored the works regularly, but now the MLAs and other leaders are not keen to monitor these works. There is no scarcity of funds for Mission Kakatiya works in Telangana state, but works are being delayed in many district. Now the contractors have only two-and-half month time to complete first and second phase works.
In this background, the farmers and people are requesting the officials and contractors to speed up the works and complete them within the time so that they could take up farming.
