New Delhi: Jawaharlal Nehru University students Umar Khalid and Anirban Bhattacharya on Wednesday were sent to 3-day police custody. The Delhi police however had asked for 7-day police remand of the students.
The students who are accused of sedition, had surrendered before Delhi police around midnight on Tuesday. The students were reportedly grilled for hours by the police.
During the interrogation, the police asked the two about their whereabouts during the incident and also on their alleged raising anti-national sloganeering.
The police also asked Umar about his call detail records. Both Umar and Anirban revealed to the police about their location when they were absconding and also assisted the police in the interrogation.
The duo, who returned to the JNU campus last Sunday after having gone missing since February 12, drove from the administrative bloc to the main gate of the university, got into a Delhi Police vehicle and were taken to an undisclosed destination, reported PTI.
Umar Khalid, Anirban Bhattacharya and three other students had allegedly raised anti-national slogans in the JNU campus at a cultural event organised on the death anniversary of terrorist Afzal Guru.
