Gangster Gawli to be released from Nagpur jail on parole

MUMBAI: Convicted gangster-turned-politician Arun Gawli will return home for two weeks on Tuesday. He is being released now from the Nagpur Central jail after the Bombay high court on Friday granted him permission for a 15-day parole from prison.

A bench of Justices AB Chaudhari and PN Deshmukh of the Nagpur bench had after hearing Gawli's lawyers Sudatta Patil and Priyanka Patil plead for his parole for his son's wedding said, "... after hearing both the sides the court is pleased to grant leave as he has been in Jail since last seven years and also since 2012 since his conviction he has not come out. So also since it is his son's wedding he has to remain present for the wedding being the father of the bride groom. On these grounds he is granted Parole for 15 days from the date of his actual release from the jail.''

The Judges have imposed a condition on the leave. The 62-year-old Gawli, according to that condition would have to attend Agripada police station once in two days.

Advocate Patil argued that Since Gawali's son was getting married he wanted to be out on parole. Gawli is lodge at the Nagpur Central jail. His health appeared alright said his lawyer later.

The wedding of Gawli's son is on May 9. The state government had however, rejected Gawli's application for parole stating that there was apprehension of a cognizable offense being committed if he is released. Gawli moved the HC against the rejection of his application for parole.

In august 2012, a special MCOCA court in Mumbai had sentenced Gawli to life imprisonment for a March 2008 murder of Shiv Sena corporator Kamlakar Jamsandekar.
Jamsandekar, was shot dead in March 2008 near his Asalpha residence in suburban Ghatkopar in Mumbai by members of Gawli's gang, the court held The prosecution's case and the chargesheet contended that Gawli was paid Rs.30 lakh by Jamsandekar's business and political rivals, Sahebrao Bhintade and Bala Surve. Gawli, who has been in police custody since May 2008.
