GUNTUR: To cover the losses they have been incurring for long and regain the confidence of customers they have steadily been losing out to private bus operators, APSRTC officials at Guntur region office are mulling different ideas, most of them innovative.
One such programme, to be implemented from Monday (October 6), is to run exclusive buses for students, especially during peak hours.
During peak hours, most of the RTC buses being operated in the region are filled with school and college students with bus passes. It means no revenue for RTC and no seats or standing place for ordinary passengers. Left with no option, the general public are opting for private buses. To overcome this problem and encourage the public to use RTC buses for their travel again, RTC officials have come out with the idea of exclusive buses for students.
Student special buses will be operated by Guntur II, Tenali, Chilakaluripet and Narasaraopet depots, where most of the Engineering Colleges are located. Speaking to Express, APSRTC Guntur Regional Manager Gnanamgari Shrihari said that except the student bus-pass holders, other passengers will not be allowed into the student special buses. However, regular bus services will follow student specials and those will be limited only to ferrying general passengers, he said.
“During our interaction with passengers, we came to understand that general passengers prefer private transport during hours as the RTC buses will packed with students and we came out with the idea of introducing student special buses during those hours,” he said and added that they will also increase the number of student bus services as per demand in the future.
