The government has given exemption to Basavatarakam Indo-American Cancel Hospital and Research Institute, established by former Chief Minister N T Rama Rao and belongs to Telugu Desam Party Andhra Pradesh legislator N Balakrishna, from paying building penalisation charges to the tune of Rs 5.72 crore. The decision was taken on the recommendations of Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation commissioner. The commissioner asked the government to consider the appeal made by BIAHRI as a special case.
The chairman and managing trustee of Basavatarakam Indo-American Cancel Hospital and Research Institute had earlier requested the government to exempt them from payment of building penalisation charges for the building constructed by them on Road Nos 10 and 14 of Banjara Hills. In their representation, they said that it was promoted by Nandamuri Basava Taraka Rama Rao Memorial Cancer Foundation Trust, India, and Indo-American Cancer Organization, USA, and it was a public charitable trust.
The State government gave eight acres of land on lease for establishing the Cancer Institute, accorded recognition to the institute for treating government employees and retired employees and their families, accorded recognition to the institute for Chief Minister’s Relief Fund, Central Government Health Scheme accorded recognition to the institute for treating the Central government employees, the Central government accorded recognition for Prime Minister’s Relief Fund and gave Rs 1 crore grant for the institute for purchase of medical equipment.
The government had referred the application to GHMC commissioner and he reported that the applicant had applied for BPS in 2008. The applicant paid Rs 1 lakh towards initial penal amount for penalisation of unauthorised constructions and deviation made by them in the site and balance penalisation charge of Rs 5,72,77,000 was required to be paid.
Regarding the services rendered by the Trust, the Medical, Health and Family Welfare Department had reported that a committee headed by principal of Osmania General Hospital inspected the hospital and its facilities and reported that it was catering to treatment of all types of cancers to the patients from Telangana, Andhra Pradesh and other parts of the country. Treatment is available to all categories of people, including those from below poverty line.
At present, there are facilities for 500 to 600 patients IP and OP a day. As much as 1.4 lakh patients are getting benefited through this hospital per annum. Large number of patients (about 40 per cent) are getting treatment under Arogyasri and no patient is being turned back due to lack of finance.
As the patients are from different parts of the States and the country, all the attenders of the patients are provided with dormitory facility. Another dormitory block is also coming up. The hospital was started with 50 beds and increased to more than 550 beds now. It is also recognised as an institute of excellence.
