The High Court on Thursday directed the police to hand over the bodies of Maoists allegedly killed in an encounter in Chhattisgarh on March 1 to their family members after taking due acknowledgement from them. The court asked the police to have a videograph of the process.
The direction was given by a bench of the High Court while dealing with a petition filed by Prof G Laxman, president of Civil Liberties Committee urging the court to declare the killing of eight Maoists by paramilitary forces during a joint combing operation as illegal and in violation of Articles 14 and 21 of the Constitution.
The petitioner contended that the bodies of the eight Maoists were kept in Bhadrachalam government hospital which had no facilities to preserve them for a long time. He urged the court to shift the bodies to Osmania Hospital in Hyderabad.
