Slippers, shoes were hurled at Jawaharlal Nehru Students' Union president Kanhaiya Kumar today in Nagpur where he was addressing a public meeting on the occasion of 125th birth anniversary of BR Ambedkar.
As soon as Kanhaiya arrived at the stage, some men hurled shoes, slippers and shouted slogans against Kanhaiya, prompting him to say, "What sort of patriotism is displayed by throwing slippers?"
Earlier today, some men reportedly belonging to Bajrang Dal attacked Kanhaiya's car when he arrived in the city. Police have detained five people in connection with the attack.
This is Kanhaiya Kumar's first visit to Nagpur after he was charged with sedition for allegedly organising and participating in an event at JNU where anti-national slogans were raised .
Kanhaiya and two other students Umar Khalid and Anirban Bhattacharya were arrested on sedition charges in February. They were released on 6-month interim bail in March.
The incident had sparked a nationwide debate on nationalism and also a face-off between the BJP and Opposition parties led by Congress.
