Karnataka local polls: Congress wins most seats

The ruling Congress in Karnataka has emerged the most successful party in local elections to 1,083 zilla panchayat seats and 3,884 taluk panchayat seats in the state.

It wrested clear control of zilla panchayats in 11 of 30 districts in the state, as compared to four in the 2011 elections, while the BJP has outright control over eight districts unlike 13 last time and the JD(S) has lost one of three districts from 2011. As many as nine districts have thrown up hung verdicts.

Mysuru, the home district of Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, and Tumkuru, the home district of state Congress president G Parameshwara, have both thrown up hung results. The Congress has gained zilla panchayats in central and northern Karnataka while the BJP has maintained control over its traditional districts in the coastal parts of Karnataka while losing some ground in central and north Karnataka. The JD(S) has won in its traditional south Karnataka strongholds of Mandya and Hassan.

Notable victors in the zilla panchayat elections are former prime minister H D Deve Gowda’s daughter-in-law Bhavani Revanna, who made her maiden foray into electoral politics by contesting from the family borough in Holenarasipura in Hassan district.

“The results show that the people in the state have faith in the Congress government,” said Chief Minister Siddaramaiah.
