New Delhi: The cost of printing Re 1 note is about Rs 1.14, more than its value. Security Printing and Minting Corporation of India (SPMCIL), under the Central government, informed under the Right to Information Act.

The provisional and unaudited cost of printing a Re 1 note is Rs 1.14 in accordance with the principle of costing and costing module. The exact amount will be known only after a full-level auditing.

Responding to an application filed by RTI activist Subash Chandra Agarwal, SPMCIL said that the printing of Re 1 note was stopped in 1994 due to higher cost of printing. Due to the same reason, printing of Rs 2 and Rs 5 currency notes were also stopped and coins in the same denominations were introduced.

Central Finance Ministry had announced of re-printing Re 1 note on December 16, 2014. The new currency note was released at Srinathji temple in Rajasthan on March 6. The specialty of this note was that all currency notes carry RBI Governor's signature, while the Re 1 note carries the signature of the Secretary of the Finance Ministry.
