AICC vice-president Rahul Gandhi is likely to visit Challuru in Veenavanka mandal of Karimnagar district to meet a Dalit girl who was gangraped. The district Congress leaders, quoting information from the TPCC leaders, said Rahul Gandhi may visit the girl’s place in 3-4 days. Former ministers Sabitha Indra Reddy, Geeta Reddy and Sunitha Laxma Reddy met the rape victim and consoled her on Wednesday. The Congress has promised to fight for the girl till justice was done to her.
Meanwhile, people, under the banner of United Front of Dalit Associations, on Thursday staged a demonstration at the Collectorate in Karimnagar demanding stern action against the accused and also the police officials who had insulted the rape victim at the police station. They alleged that the SI and the constable were just suspended as an eye-wash and action should be initiated against the CI and DSP as attempts were being made to shield the culprits in the case.
They further alleged that the police were trying to project the accused as minors and all the three accused should be punished. A judicial probe should be ordered and the victim should be provided compensation of Rs 1 crore, apart from a job, double-bedroom house and three acres of land, they said. United Dalit Front convenor Prof Surapilli Sujatha, co-convenor Marwadi Sudarshan, Kothapalli Amarnath, Jannu Jayaraj and others led the protest.
