Crane rams into college bus; 24 hurt

Hyderabad: As many as 24 students of CVR Engineering College suffered injuries in a bus-crane collision in front of the Telangana Assembly on Sunday. The condition of two persons, an engineering student and physical education teacher, is critical, said the police. The bus belonging to the CVR College carrying 45 students and a PET was heading to People’s Plaza on Necklace Road.

All of the sudden, a crane working with the Hyderabad Metro Rail heading towards the All India Radio office, rammed into the bus tearing the front left portion of the bus into pieces. P Manjusha (21), final year engineering student and S Sai Reddy (38), PET, suffered severe head injuries, while 22 others suffered minor injuries.

The students were on their way to attend a 5K-Run with the theme ‘Behave Human’ organised by the college management. Around 1,200 students from the college were to take part in the run conducted on Necklace Road. The bus (AP 04 U 2449) was the last bus with students and as it was getting late, the driver was in a little hurry, according to the police.

The injured students were shifted to Global Hospital at Lakdikapul and MaxCure hospital in Saifabad. Manjusha suffered multiple fractures and Sai Reddy suffered fracture to his head, left hand and left leg. They are kept under observation for 48 hours. “A crane belonging to L&T, working for the Hyderabad Metro Rail coming from Lakdikapul, rammed into the bus.

As many as 24 students suffered injuries and no causalities have been reported. Except three, other students were discharged after administering the first aid,” said Saifabad SI V Venkata Narayana. The college management said the driver Krishanaiah had been working with the college for the past 11 years and never received complaints of rash or negligent driving by Krishnaiah.

It is leant that Manjusha’s younger sister Meghana died about five years ago in a road accident. Her parents who are private employees are in deep shock after the incident. T Madhava Reddy, brother-in-law of PET Sai Reddy, said they received information at 6.30 pm about the accident. Sai Reddy, a resident of BN Reddy Nagar, was married in 2006 and has two children. The Saifabad police said the crane driver had been taken into custody and investigation was on in the case.
